DIY Cross Stitch Project Box

Cross Stitch Project Box

I made this for myself way back in the day when I was living at my dad’s house, really getting into cross stitch.  It holds needles threaded with floss for the project at hand, on self-adhesive magnet strips stuck around the top, just below the lap edge for the lid.  I used stickers for the symbols in the chart originally, but the small post-it notes work pretty well, too.  Three or four colors to a side and you can have 16 different colors if you want.  The lid serves as a receptacle for the floss cuttings while you work and will secure the needles and floss when you put it on the box.

The box is a plastic one made by AMAC. 2 1/4 inches square by 6 1/4 inches tall.  I found them online at The Container Store. There used to be one in Kansas City, but the closest is in St Louis now.  Sometimes I find them at craft stores like Michaels and Hobby Lobby, but haven’t looked in a while.  The magnet is just a roll of self-adhesive, about 1/2 to 3/4 inches wide, cut with scissors. Clean the box well before you stick them and they’ll stay on good, these have been on for 25 years!

Let me know what you’ve made, I love to see creative tools!
